Kid’s Party: McKenzie’s Art Party

What was the reason for the celebration?
Although McKenzie is diagnosed with Down Syndrome, her disability does not stop her. She is an amazing child that truly has a love for the arts! Since music and painting are her favorite hobbies, her parents knew that an amazing art party would be fitting for her 7th birthday.

What is something fun you remembered either about the process or the big day?
The guest were welcomed with delicious appetizers and activities, such as face painting and a photo booth, prior to the paint session. Friends had the option to choose among pre-prepped canvases: unicorns, Batman, mermaid, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The kids enjoyed visiting different stations before the paint session started.

Anything super unique about the big day?
The parents initially wanted to host McKenzie’s party at an art studio. However, all of the studios have a policy that parties last on average 1 – 1.5 hours. Since we didn’t want to rush this event, we decided to go with an event venue. The majority of the guests were impressed that everyone could stay and have fun without that rush that one would find at several kid party venues. They were also impressed that an event venue was actually transformed into an art studio, with art hanging on the walls, to the painted drop cloth serving as linen at the children’s art table.

Any tips you would share with others planning an event?
To execute an amazing event, please put in the time. We’re talking several months to plan a kid’s party. Many vendors work with birthday and wedding clients; to ensure that your venue or date is available for you, it doesn’t hurt to reach out several months prior.

What was your planning experience like?
Olivia Bursey Ward, with Studio 1524 was the primary designer. She knew she wanted to transform the venue to an actual art studio; she did just that. Adrian Winfrey, with Captivating Balloons, also provided their amazing colorful organic balloons, creating the perfect backdrop for the birthday party.

The Location
McKenzie’s Art Party was held at No.2 Vance in Memphis, TN. Original sliding doors, exposed brick, and hardwood floors created the perfect canvas for McKenzie’s Art Studio.

The Fashion
How did you pick your event day outfit?
We knew McKenzie’s outfit had to match the art-themed party. We found a vendor online that created a colorful, vibrant art graffiti dress; so fitting for her party!

Describe your cake/desserts.
McKenzie’s art-themed birthday cake was provided
by MyMoniCakes. This is a three-tiered cake, with everyone’s favorite flavors of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. The top tier, shaped like a paint can, was a nice touch.

Favors?
For favors, McKenzie’s guests departed the party with cookies shaped as paintbrushes and palettes, created by Whimsy Cookie Company. Everyone was also provided with cute “paint can” party favors filled with goodies, with a special thank you note, “THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY BIRTHDAY PARTY A MASTERPIECE.”
