Styled Shoot: Fun For the Kids

Concept
Candy Coated Circus:
The concept here was a bright, fun, circus that was more editorial in nature. The whimsy of the table being set up in the ball pit was planned and intentional. I wanted to bring it over the top in a subtle way and I thought the table in the ball pit would do just that. For that reason, we didn’t want to overdo any part of the design. Simple backdrop, simple balloons, but still fun.

Black Girl, You’re Out of This World:
We wanted this to be really special. A party that any little black girl would love to be a part of and feel included in when they saw. We used all of the things little girls like that are magical; fairies, butterflies, unicorns, and princesses were all part of the design. The lunch table is mostly black but we used a lot of texture and purples to help pop out the design more. The white acrylic table helped a lot as well. The backdrop has some sequins in it, florals, and varying heights to keep the eye interested. All of the shades of purple in the design were very intentional as well.

Theme, color palette?
Candy Coated Circus:
Hot pink, bright blue, and canary yellow

Black Girl, You’re Out of This World:
Black, white, purple, lavender, and mixed metallics.

Anything super unique or fun about the shoot?
All the vendors for both shoots were women of color which was very important to me. Our photographer which was the only male on the crew was black as well. We really wanted to show that black voices in the creative industries have a design point of view that deserves to be shown. Vibrant colors and expressive images are beautiful too!

How were the fashion details chosen?
Style Me Mom was the fashion stylist for both shoots. She chose both looks that were fun and colorful and also including boy and girl suits for our ringmasters for the circus. For BGM she chose black dresses that made them feel like princesses!
